St. Thomas More College

Cox Architecture were commissioned to provide full architectural services for the new Student Accommodation facilities at St Thomas More College.  This redevelopment is part of an initiative for consolidation of the greater college precinct at the University of Western Australia in Perth.

The redevelopment represents a wholesale repositioning of the college architecturally as well as operationally. The primary objective to “re-badge” the college delivering dramatically improved amenity and facilities for students and staff, and to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all students and incorporates pastoral care, social support, recreation, meals and other student related services.

The St Thomas More College accommodation is appropriately supported by new administration and common amenities, including a new ‘civic heart’ for the college being the major recreation room. This space is strategically located along the main pedestrian spine, adjacent to the new urban courtyard and existing grass sports pitch.

Cox thought laterally to create an outstanding living and learning environment where a diverse collegiate community is encouraged to develop and excel.

The new buildings were conceived as important material additions to the University landscape, providing a much stronger physical presence for both the college and the University on the University campus’s primary, ceremonial frontage, with significant capacity to strengthen the University’s architectural identity and physical presence along its eastern gateway.

Cox Architecture conceived the built forms to leverage the adjacent assets of the Swan River, Kings Park and the University precinct. This concept strengthens the existing north-south axis whilst integrating the existing architecture of the Dining Hall and Chapel.
