The Pavilion at Karen Rolton Oval is a community sports hub and has been named after one of Australia’s most celebrated female cricketers. Located within the beautiful Adelaide Parklands, the pavilion was conceived to embrace its surrounds and float lightly on the landscape, while its form is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional cricket pavilion.
Constructed in 1913, Her Majesty’s Theatre is Adelaide’s oldest continually operating performance venue and holds a place of cultural and historic significance within the city. COX have been engaged to modernize the theatre to better accommodate contemporary expectations, whilst maintaining its historical integrity.

The Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal (CTD) project comprised the replacement of nine dangerous rail level crossings with five elevated railway stations along one of Melbourne’s busiest transport corridors. By elevating the line and stations, this project presented an opportunity to transform an extensive tract of land within Melbourne’s metropolitan zone into a new linear park.

Wynyard Station was opened in 1932 as part of a network loop devised to service the city centre. Construction was undertaken as a complex cut and cover methodology, by first excavating and then re-building Wynyard Park on top. The station consists of a large single level, low height concourse, atypical of underground stations in the area and had been subject to numerous modifications over the decades.

The Minister for Education announced the redevelopment of the Applecross Senior High School on the existing site. The school was established in 1958 and is located on Link Road in the riverside suburb of Ardross, close to Garden City Shopping Centre, Booragoon Bus Transport Hub, and the Melville City Council buildings and Public Library.

We were commissioned to provide full architectural services for the new Carnarvon Police and Justice Complex. The Agencies have been consolidated on one site to effectively meet the current and future policing and justice needs of Carnarvon and the surrounding communities. The project comprises the construction of a new purpose-built police, justice and corrections complex in a landmark position on the Former Gascoyne Traders Site on the corner of Robinson Street and Babbage Island Road.
The primary objective of this project was to find a resilient solution to Brisbane City Council’s CityCat terminals which were heavily impacted by the devastation of the 2011 flood. This was achieved by devising an ingenious system of parts, that enable the terminals to give way in a flood and return immediately to operation after the event, all using the natural water flow.
Element is a mixed use development on the harbour at the Kingston Foreshore. The philosophy behind Element is to create a carefully designed building which expresses an imaginative modularity, offering proof that inner urban spaces can not only be attractive and liveable places, but also cost effective to construct, and efficiently serviced.
This new pedestrian bridge completes a fully accessible link from the Merlion Park, to the Esplanade Bridge and the Esplanade Plaza.
The design gesture is a simple one which uses an understated double curvilinear geometry to counterpoise the complex double helix bridge on the opposite side of the bay. This solution positively completes the important public domain access way around the Marina Bay.
Our design represents an evolution of sports and entertainment environments as key cultural and social event platforms for public life. Conceived with Arup, our design is a synthesis of traditional Japanese craft with a structurally light environmental enclosure. This enclosure utilises the inherent efficiency of the egg form, employing a diagrid structure over an elliptical shell. Within the enclosure are a series of segmented, crafted timber stand elements.
Orange Airport is located 15km south east of Orange and is serviced by Rex Airlines providing regular passenger services between Orange and Sydney, accommodating regional community and tourism needs. As a gateway to Orange and the surrounding region, the Council has continued to improve facilities over the past 10 years. As part of the long term vision for the airport, the terminal building housing operational, retail and hospitality facilities was scheduled for upgrade.
The St Lucia Lakes Link is an important project to the University of Queensland in providing a pedestrian amenity to what has become the single largest population arrival point to the campus. For a modest budget, the project has converted a previously arduous and often sodden goat track into a journey traversed effortlessly by students by bus, cycle, ferry and on foot.
The Westside temporary structure at Acton Park departs from the conventional notion of permanence in architecture, which has hitherto been avidly applied to most buildings erected in the National Capital Zone. The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre is a recycling and expansion of the original 1960s Southport Pool sited in the Gold Coasts Broadwater Parklands. The redevelopment creates the venue for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and held the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in 2014.

The University of Queensland Oral Health Centre synthesises the concerns we regard as critical in architecture. One is that buildings convey abstractly their purpose, in this case embodying the ‘craft of dentistry’, in the craft of the forms and spaces. A second is that buildings enrich context – here the building is designed to unite the university’s medical campus with an adjoining hospital with which it functions. A third is to humanise institutional buildings at every moment in its experience.
Griffith University Health Centre is the first tertiary education building in Australia to combine all of a university’s health and medical disciplines in one facility. It provides services to the public in each of these disciplines.
ILK Apartments was conceived through the ideas of 'place-making', 'event', 'environments', and 'craft', providing a platform for a diverse community to integrate with and make positive contributions to the Toorak Road precinct.
The King House is a single family dwelling in South Canberra. The design utilises simple forms and compact planning to create a restrained house that nevertheless offers a very high level of amenity. The design takes advantage of the existing falls across the site by stepping subtly along its length, thereby creating higher ceilings to living areas and more intimate spaces to sleeping areas.
This project is stage 1 of a planned neurological research precinct within the Randwick education / health district.
This narrow private house demonstrates what can be achieved on the myriad of ‘left-over’ spaces in inner cities, such as disused easements or parking lots. In this case, a 3 metre wide tiny caretaker’s cottage, adjoining a Heritage Hall has been recycled and linearly extended into a family house and office for parents and three children.

The rebuilding to the north eastern frontage of the campus has enabled the design team to challenge and rethink the spaces for learning at Wesley College’s St Kilda Road Campus.
This project is located on top of a remote mesa in far north Queensland in outback Australia. It was created as a visitor centre for people to witness first-hand one of the world’s most significant and cohesive dinosaur collections and it is remarkable for two reasons.
A major expansion of the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, but also a completion of the concept of the original building which was discontinued in 1996 due to a then dispersal of Government funds to other public projects.
One One One Eagle Street forms the centrepiece of a trio of towers that mark Brisbane’s renowned Riverside Precinct. It occupies a site that comprises the loading docks and basement carpark access to the existing neighbouring towers either side. The site’s sever constraint was the lack of bearing points due to those existing encumbrances.
The Centre creates a series of space types and environments that are designed around patterns of human interaction, a “Learning Landscape” approach, an approach that is about leveraging the power of planning for interaction at the campus level and rather than approaching design and planning from the traditional perspective of siting a new building as a generic space type.
The creation of two new rail stations (at South Morang and Thomastown) and the relocation and modernising of a third (Epping Station) lie at the heart of this project, with all three forming key nodal points in a longer term urban focus.
The public success of the project has been to both the experience of this major Queensland cultural facility and dramatically in terms of visitation, the Museum Director writing: “For the first time in our 150 year history, we have welcomed more than one million visitors to the museum network… however it is the 22% increase to Queensland Museum (744,654) that has made all the difference, in no small part due to the interior refurbishment”.
The pavilion was designed to replace a solid brick and concrete structure that had become of increasing safety concern due to lack of transparency. While accepting the need for change, the local community was intensely interested in the new design, particularly in how it related to an adjoining park and how it should reflect West End’s unpretentious, laid-back character.

SW1 is a mixed commercial and residential development occupying a 1.8 hectare site adjacent to the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. Although the land had been reserved for expansion of the Centre, it was decided to create a precinct instead that helped to connect the South Bank Parklands with the neighbourhood behind.
The Riverway Arts Centre is the centrepiece of a much larger project, firstly to rehabilitate the Ross River, and secondly to create a community heart in a city where shopping malls governed social interaction. Without then knowing what elements to put in it, the mayor sought from us a master plan to transform 18 hectares of mostly barren riverfront park for multiple community activities.
Allisee is a medium-scale apartment residential community set around an inner harbour, pools, parks and gardens. Its configuration differs markedly from a former strategy which had proposed a much higher, denser ‘wall’ of buildings encircling the harbour with scattered, lower value development around the remaining site.

Unlike its predecessor, James Street Market in Brisbane’s New Farm, the site for Ferry Road Market did not have the benefit of passing trade. It thus had to become a destination worth the journey to it, both visually and experientially.
